(AP) -A computer at the data processing center here has finally got the message man is its master, not vice versa. Throughout a number of successive payroll runs, the computer refused to pay Ann Williams, secretary for eight years to Commonwealth's Atty. Peter W.

Axson Jr. Still Not Fooled In fact, it wouldn't even acknowledge she was an employe. The programmers changed tactics and fed Mrs. Williams' time into the machine as a "new employe." The computer wasn't to be fooled. "Duplicate new hire!" it snapped.

That's computer talk for someone already on the payroll. Where on the payroll? The computer clammed up. It wouldn't tell where Mrs. Williams is employed. It only insisted that she was: It wouldn't pay her, ami it wouldn't hire her.

And nobody could persuade the machine to explain why. It was time for the programmers to show who was boss. Decided To Yield They "ordered" the computer to search its master list of employes, locate Mrs. Williams and transfer her from wherever she was to the commonwealth attorney's office. Oh yes, and pay her.

The computer mulled this over and decided to yield. On the next run, it meekly acknowledged Mrs. Williams and paid her. lj 1st Cut sMmf" wij ih ib. SAVE 18c i-j Freddy allows, without amplifying, that he is able to identify bits and pieces of many characters in "The Heart of the Matter" from wartime patrons of the City Hotel. "Oh yes, they were all real people," he said, and then added, nostalgically: "You know, I was just re-reading the book last week." Journey Back Greene, he said, made a sentimental journey back to Sierra Leone about a year ago. But he stayed at the City Hotel's modern competitor up the hill, the Paramount. In truth, the rooms at the City Hotel are not its forte. But in the evenings, especially on the weekends, it is one of the jumpingest places in Freetown.

Politicians of all descriptions descend on the sturdy, palm-fringed 'colonial edifice and sit under slowly turning ceiling fans in its spacious bar-room to enjoy a beer and good conversation. Patrons sometimes help Freddy behind the bar. One evening an astonished customer found himself being served by a High Court judge. Later on in the evening, Freetown's loveliest practitioners of the world's oldest, profession drop in, looking for free tirinks and customers. And, in the shadows of the front porch, squats a Hausa trader from Nigeria, peddling jewelry, carved wooden trinkets and animal skins, and offering to change the currencies of five African nations for "an honest rate." Enters Insanity Plea in Slaying 5 Californians SANTA CRUZ, Calif.

(AP) -John Linley Frazier pleaded innocent by reason of insanity today to the slaying of Dr. Victor M. Ohta and four others in the doctor's hilltop mansion near Santa Cruz last Oct. 19. The 24-year-old Frazier had pleaded innocent to the murder charges last Nov.

12 after his lawyer received permission to switch the plea to insanity if he wished. Frazier entered the new plea during a 10-minute appearance in Santa Cruz County Superior Court. His attorney, James Jackson, asked that Frazier be examined by psychiatrists. Judge Charles F. Franich asked that the doctors' reports be submitted to the court by Feb.

9. Frazier is charged with five counts of murder in the shooting deaths of Ohta, a wealthy 45-year-old eye surgeon; his wife, Virginia, two sons and a secretary, Dorothy Cadwallader. Their bodies were found by firemen who arrived to fight a raging fire at the luxurious home. The victims had been bound, blindfolder, shot and tossed in the pool. Frazier was arrested several days later as he slept in a cow shed not far from the mansion.

OK Housing Project AKRON. Ohio (AP) City Council has authorized a public housing project to replace the World War Hillwood Homes allotment in southeast Akron. Present residents are to have priority on new housing to be built for the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority. The project is to include 500 town house apartments and single family units, and is expected to take two years to complete. Mount Blanc is the highest mountain in Western Europe.

MARKHAM Associated Press Writer FREETOWN. Sierra Leone (AP) Remember the Bedford Hotel in Graham Greene's novel about a conscientious Catholic police officer who gradually destroys himself in a backwater West African colony during World War Admirers of the novel, "The Heart of the Matter," -will recall the hilarious scene in which Wilson, an undercover, agent, and his comrade Harris turn cockroach hunting into a competitive sport, wacking their shoes against the hotel's thin walls. The pseudonymic Bedford Hotel, in real life the City Hotel, is still alive and well in Freetown, where Greene worked for British intelligence "during 1942-1943.

Local Fame Despite the dubious advertising provided by Greene's novel, the City Hotel has over the years achieved an independent, local fame of its own and is the gathering spot, for both the famous and the not-so-famous, the rich and the not-very-rich in this lively little town. Square, squat, a little down-at-the-heels, the City Hotel has no sign over its high front-porch, but visitors to Freetown have no difficulty in finding it. "I get a little bored with being asked all the time, 'is this the hotel in "The Heart of the explained Fred Ferrari, the institution's Swiss-born proprietor. Freddy, as he is known to everyone from Prime Minister Siaka Stevens to a casual first-visitor, came to Sierra Leone in the same year as Graham Greene, at the age of 22.
