Broyles lost his life while gallantly covering the withdrawal of his company from a position under intense fire of the rapidly advancing enemy in the vicinity of Chipyong. Broyles stood fast, engaging the, enemy with deadly rifle fire until his position was overrun. When his company counterattacked, Broyles was found dead in his foxhole with two enemy dead beside him.
