HEARS FROM HIS SISTER Ambrose Larger of Hamburg Gets a Letter from War Zone, Informing Him that His Sister is Safe I'm the happiest man iu Fairfield county, writes Ambrose Larger, the Hamburg merohant 'since 1 received a letter from my sister in Alsace, whom 1 had noC'heard from since war was declared. She is all right and her only son has gone to war having enlisted for four months. She has not heard anything from him since he left. All the houses In the town in which she lives are occupied by French soldiers' and they are making rapid advances on the Germans. She had in her home at one time fifteen French soldiers, but now is shelter ing only four.

Everything is on a standstill there. Every night at six o'clock an alarm is sounded and the people must go in their houses and stay there. The schools and churches are all closed. All the men from seventeen to fifty have Joined the French army. His slater can secure bread half the time and everything is so high that it is hard to live.

The French soldiers are so kind to them she says. No church bells are rung at any jMme. The French even compelled the postmaster of this town to enlist ind go to the front. The war of 1S70 is nothing to compare to this one. When this letter was written there were German soldiers about the town or near It.

Everything is ruled by the French and she hopes they will Stay there and keep the Germans out as all her sympathy is with the rench. EDUCATIONAL NEWS NOTES.
